Aalborg
Aalborg – partying and more
In Denmark, and even in Scandinavia as a whole, Aalborg has a reputation as being the city to party in. A major contributor to this is the “Jomfru Ane” street in the city center, which is filled with restaurants, discotheques and clubs. The annual Aalborg Carnival takes place towards the last week in May, comprising the children’s carnival (Børnekarneval), the carnival bands competition or “battle”, and the carnival itself.
As the fourth largest city in Denmark, Aalborg also has a “serious” side to it, with a number of different attractions. One of these is the Utzon Center on Aalborg’s waterfront, with displays relating to the work of Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect who among other things designed the Sydney Opera House.
More traditional sights to see in Aalborg include the half-timbered Aalborghus castle and period houses in the town center, the Renaissance architecture typified by the 17th century Jens Bangs House and the 14th – 15th century Budolfi Church. The Aalborg Zoo, Museum of Modern Art, Maritime Museum and Historical Museum are additional sights. Further back in time and a little way out from Aalborg centre, Lindholm Høje is a vast Viking burial ground, having also been the dwelling place for many up till about 1200 AD.
