Viborg – religion, sport and a miniature world
Viborg in mainland Jutland has a rich history of religious turmoil. Viborg Cathedral (Viborg Domkirke) has like the phoenix risen from its ashes several time, having burned down to the ground on different occasions since its original construction in 1130. Similar misfortunes were experienced by the monks and today only the remains of Franciscan and Dominican monasteries can be seen.
Viborg is also a leading city for sports and in particular handball and football. Viborg teams in both areas are often in the top few European (handball) or Danish (football) clubs. The city also organizes the Viborg City Marathon every year in the month of September.
In the Viborg area, attractions include the Limestone mines of Daugbjerg and Mønsted, the Electricity Museum (Elmuseet) in Tange, and the World in Miniature in Klejtrup Lake (Verdenskortet, Klejtrup Sø). The latter is an large open air domain with expanses of dry land representing the different continents and countries (to scale), and water for the oceans. Visitors can then walk from “continent” to “continent”.
