Hillerød – its castle, forests and deer
The most famous part of Hillerød in the North of Zealand is Frederiksborg Castle. With its own internal chapel and knights’ hall, both richly decorated, the grandiose castle also houses historical and 20th century art collections, as well as the Museum of National History. Large baroque gardens from 1720 surround the castle. There is a small private railway between Hillerød and Helsingør that allows you to extend your visit to also see Fredensborg castle in Fredensborg and Kronborg castle in Helsingør in the same day.
Hillerød also has the remains of two monasteries, the ruins of Æbelholt Abbey and one remaining building from the Esrum Abbey. The Æbelholt site also has a museum with information on the medical knowledge of the Augustinian monks, a display of skeletons and a herb garden. Around Hillerød there are also widespread forests and also lakes. The Fredensborg Palace Garden borders onto the forests of Gribskov, also home to deer and other wild game.
