Herning – design and sport
In the middle of Jutland, Herning offers attractions within and around the town, and is also a useful base for others close by. Although much of the activity in the town is geared to the Messecenter Herning, the biggest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, Danish design and originality also shows through in monuments such as Elia, a giant 60 meter high dome painted black with four columns and a computer-controlled gas burner producing jets of flame. Close by is the Herning Art Museum, and the town also has a number of buildings designed by Jørn Utzon, reminiscent of his other famous creation of the Sydney Opera House in Australia.
Herning is also a center for sports of a number of kinds, including angling, golf, horseback riding and cycling. The GP (Grand Prix) Herning cycle race is held every year as part of the UCI Europe tour. Further to this, you can easily go from Herning to other nearby attractions such as the Legoland theme park at Billund and the lion park at Givskud Zoo.
