Helsingor

Helsingør – more than just the Shakespeare connection

Even if the Kronborg castle dominates the town, Helsingør is also an active port with a well-known shopping area. Paved streets and pastel-colored houses with half-timbering are typical of the town, with winding streets and long sandy beaches nearby.

In the Kronborg castle itself, you can visit one of the biggest and grandest knights’ halls of any castle in Denmark. From the heights of the ramparts, your view will be over Helsingør itself and across the inland sea to the twin town in Sweden, Helsingbor. Ferries run frequently for the short trip between the two towns and a day trip to Sweden like this can add an extra dimension to your visit.

The spirit of Shakespeare is always present, and even more when the Hamlet Summer Festival is being held in Kronborg Castle. Danish and international theatrical productions take place at this time, and you may have the chance of seeing a famous or even a favorite actor on stage.
