Gentofte – a suburb with its own identity
Given the density of population in the Copenhagen area, it comes as no surprise that certain suburbs of the city have taken on a distinct character of their own. Gentofte is one of these and thanks to a number of attractions can be considered as a destination of interest in its own right. A major advantage is its accessibility from Copenhagen centre on the suburban rail network, which is fast, comfortable and reliable.
Major points of interest are the Charlottenlund Fort (in Charlottenlund, part of the Gentofte suburb), the Bernstorff Palace, and Ordrupgaard, which is an art museum with displays of French impressionist and Danish artists’ works. In Klampenborg, another part of Gentofte, there is Bakken, the oldest, still functioning amusement park in the world. Hellerup sports the enormous beer bottle emblem of the Tuborg brewery complex located there, as well as hosting Gentofte football stadium. And you can also get back to nature with the Gammelmose (the natural parkland) and the Gentofte Lake.
